Ritchie Wellman is one of the directors of Safeguard Community Support.
Images of Ritchie Wellman holding large firearms are not conducive of someone that wants to be a passive observer. For someone linked to a group claiming to provide “community safety”, those images raise obvious questions about judgement, culture and intent.
Ritchie Wellman & paedophile-hunter vigilantism
Wellman is also a self-described paedophile-hunter vigilante. That may sound heroic at first, because nobody should minimise child abuse or the need to protect children, but the danger is that these groups often operate outside proper safeguarding structures. They can contaminate evidence, undermine prosecutions, misidentify people, alert wider abuse networks, and put victims at greater risk.
Vigilante politics always expands. Today it is “paedophile hunters”. Tomorrow it can be migrants, homeless people, young people, trans people, Muslims, refugees, or anyone else labelled a threat to “community safety”.
Once we accept self-appointed groups patrolling, we normalise a politics of suspicion and mob power. That is vigilantism - and it puts the most vulnerable people in the community at greater risk.
